Sleep of Reason Creates Monsters
2001
Votive eyes
158 x 394 inches
In The Sleep of Reason Creates Monsters 2001, Anita Dube draws a large ominous figure that alludes to the re-emergence of fascism in different parts of the world. Inspired by the etching of Francisco Goya of the same name, she constructs the work with thousands of enameled votive eyes (god’s eyes) from Hindu tradition. She wants to return- the power of god to human individuals, but as masses- directed by totalitarian leaders - it points to our grim reality.
